A few days ago, the Bham.al team got the pleasure of dining and touring the new Iron City complex on 22nd Street South downtown. Developed by Steve DeMedicis, this 22,000 Square-foot facility is exactly the kind of development that is going to put Birmingham back on top!
It was a rainy kind of afternoon, but our sprits were high as we grabbed a quick bite in the large open air grill. Appropriately fitted with a city urban feel, the decor is simple yet fitting to the overall theme of the complex. It’s easy to see that special attention was taken to preserve whatever industrial elements were existing before the overhaul.
I decided to, of course, try the special: a pulled pork sandwich with your choice of side. I opted for the sweet potato waffle fries. The food arrived fairly quick and hot. I was impressed with the smokey, moist pulled pork. The BBQ sauce brought me back to my childhood, tasted familiar to the sweet-tangy “Open-Pit” my grandfather used to serve. The sweet potato waffle fries were perfectly crisp and seasoned just right with course salt.
The special came in right at $8 plus drink. The menu ranges from sandwiches to fried chicken and tops out at about $16 for the sirloin. Over all, I was pleased. It did take us a while to get our check; there is no doubt the kinks are being quickly worked out on the service side. Our tour guide mentioned that the bar is serving up over 20 beers on draft, including the local favorites by Good People.
The well laid complex houses three stages total. One is in the grill, one set in the bar/lobby area and, of course, the Main Stage. The main room which houses the Main Stage is impressive. State-of-the-art sound and lighting equipment combined with the cool, relaxed feel make this the perfect place to spend a Friday night letting off steam after a long week.
The management has teamed up with Red Mountain Entertainment to bring the kind of groups that will draw in the crowds. However, the local staff is keenly in touch with the music scene here in Birmingham and regionally to highlight some of our up and coming stars on the smaller stages. Iron city has partnered with Bud Light to host Drive by Truckers in early August.
It is easy to see that very careful planning and passion have been poured into making Iron City something in which Birmingham can be proud. Owner Steve DeMedicis has made a strong commitment to investing in the downtown region. Iron City is just a piece of so many great things happening in that area.
